Rocking curls of your own can give the illusion of thicker, fuller hair! In this article, one of our hair stylists in West Kelowna will take you step-by-step through the process of curling short hair. Follow along below to learn more!

Hair Stylist in West Kelowna Goes Over Curling Short Hair (Steps 1-4)

  1. Start With Clean Hair

In order to get the best results, it’s a good idea to start with freshly washed locks. Styling with dirty or unwashed hair can prevent the curls from looking their best. If your hair is oily, your curls will likely begin to unravel and won’t hold their shape as well. Once you’ve washed your hair, be sure to let it dry before styling.

  1. Use Your Favourite Heat Protectant

For heat-styled curls, you will need to use a heat protectant. We’ve said it once, and we will say it again, heat protectant is a step you cannot skip! Our stylists can recommend a number of different heat protectants if you’re not sure what to use. By using heat protectant you will preserve the health and longevity of your hair.

  1. Section Your Locks

Now that you have cleaned your hair and applied your favourite heat protectant, it’s time to section off your hair. Sectioning your hair will help achieve better volume, evenness, and overall consistency. You can section off your hair by using hair clips, bobby pins, or elastic bands. The smaller the sections you create, the better.

  1. Choose Your Favourite Curling Tool

Next, you’ll want to determine what kind of curl you are trying to achieve. Curling wands, curling irons, and flat irons are the most common choices for curling your hair. Curling wands and irons are flexible options for those with short hair. This is because they often come in a variety of barrel sizes. Thus, helping you achieve different looks. Bigger barrels are good for beachy waves, and smaller barrels are good for tight curls. Additionally, both tools are very easy to use. By comparison, a flat iron has a slight learning curve in order to achieve the same kind of style.

Curling Short Hair Continued (Steps 5-7)

  1. Methods for Curling

Before you start to curl, you need to know what temperature to set your heat tool. For those with finer, delicate hair, set your device to a maximum of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. For those with thicker, coarser hair, 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit should do the trick! Once you start curling your hair, try to keep the heat on for the least amount of time. When you’re ready to release your hair from the curler, hold the curl against your head for a few seconds until the hair becomes cool. This will help the curl set. Once you’re done, you can spray your hair with hairspray (for longer-lasting curls) and brush through the curls with a paddle brush or your fingers to give a more effortless look.

  1. Heatless Methods

If you don’t want to damage your hair with heat, we hear you! Heatless styling is a much healthier option anyway. The only downside is that heatless curls usually take several hours or overnight before they are ready. For most heatless styles, it is good to have damp hair. So, spray your hair with some water or let it partially air dry after your shower before beginning. Once you’re ready, start sectioning off your locks. Then you can braid, twist, use rollers, or try sock curls for different results. After six to eight hours you should be ready to go! Heatless styles are great time savers for the morning.

  1. Styling and Finishing Touches

Once you’ve achieved the curls of your dreams, it’s time to style. Using additional products like hairspray or salt spray can help them hold their shape all day long. Talk with your stylist about what kind of products you should put in your hair after curling!

In British Columbia, the beauty industry is deregulated. This means that not every stylist or esthetician that you visit in B.C. will be licensed. In fact, there is no law in B.C. that states that stylists working at a salon need to have any sort of education or experience. Instead, it is up to the owner of the salon to ensure that their staff has sufficient knowledge and training. Comparatively, all other provinces in Canada require that hair stylists are licensed. This means they must receive an education and pass the licensing requirements in their province in order to work as a hairdresser. In this article, we will be delving deeper into the hairdressing industry in B.C. and explaining why you should choose Bottega for your next hair/beauty appointment!

Follow along below to learn more.

Hairdressing in B.C.

In B.C. no one is required to have any certification to do any hair or esthetic service. Shocking, yes, B.C. is the only province that is unregulated. The province used to be regulated and beauty salons were required to have health and safety inspections like any other business. However, in 2003, the government deregulated the beauty industry. Thus, allowing anyone (license or not) to provide hairdressing or esthetic services across the province. Unlike B.C., the rest of Canada is fully regulated. In all other places in the nation, you must have Trade Certification to be able to do hair, either as an Apprentice, Journeyman (Certificate of Qualification), or Red Seal (internationally recognized). It should be noted that not all hairdressers that went to hair school and hold hair school certificates are Trade Certified!

Most employers of beauty businesses in B.C. require employees to have a certificate of completion from a recognized cosmetology school. Although, it’s hard to say whether a salon has licensed employees. This is because the government does not regulate this in any way. Furthermore, since beauty salons are not regulated by the provincial government, not all establishments will undergo health and safety inspections. Despite this, Interior Health does provide a list of requirements for hair salons to follow regarding health and safety.

At Bottega, we have three stylists that have certificates from Hair Schools, and they will be going for their Certificate of Qualification (journeyman) and then going for their Red Seal Ticket. However, we also have two Red Seal Certified stylists and two Journeyman Trade Certified stylists. You can check the qualifications of our stylists on the “Meet the Stylists” page!

Why Choose Bottega?

Salons that don’t require their stylists to undergo proper training pose several risks to their clients. For instance, higher chances of infection or spreading of diseases. Moreover, there is a large possibility that an untrained stylist could damage or ruin a person’s hair. In addition to this, placing scissors, razors, and chemicals in the hands of an untrained stylist can result in serious injury. Finally, there is always the risk that you will leave the salon with a bad haircut.

To avoid these dangers, we recommend finding a salon that is open to the training of their stylists. As we mentioned above, all of our stylists have received education and training prior to working at our salon. Moreover, our salon is clean and follows the guidelines set by Interior Health for how a salon is to be operated. This means that our clients don’t need to worry about unsanitary conditions or nightmare haircuts. Instead, they can find comfort in knowing that our qualified stylists will be able to provide them with their dream hair! Whether that’s a new colour, layers, or a different length. You’ll also be happy to know that all of our beauty room services are performed by the same, highly-qualified stylists. Enjoy a brow tint/lamination, lash tint/lamination, or brow wax stress-free.

Brow Services at Our Beauty Bar in West Kelowna.

At BOTTEGA, we offer a range of brow services to keep those beauties’ looking clean and full. A brow wax will help those who want to tame unruly eyebrow hair. Waxing encourages thinner, softer hair regrowth. Moreover, it prevents unwanted, thick, brow hairs from growing back so viciously. Generally, most clients can go 4-6 before their next appointment. For the best results, avoid wearing makeup on your brows for 24 hours after having your brows waxed. This is because it will prevent irritation and yield better results. Book your brow wax for $18 with BOTTEGA now!

If you’re looking to enhance the colour of your brows or fill in a thin area, brow tinting could be the right solution for you! Brow tints are a great alternative to makeup. Especially, if you love to swim or play sports. This procedure is non-invasive and defines your eyebrows by using a semi-permanent dye to enhance your brow hairs and the skin beneath. For those with fine, light eyebrows this treatment is a game-changer. Brow tinting usually lasts 4-6 weeks before needing another appointment. Book a brow tint today for $18 at our Beauty Bar in West Kelowna!

Have you thought about getting your brows microbladed, but aren’t sure about the cost or pain? Well, at BOTTEGA, we offer a great alternative to microblading—brow lamination! This semi-permanent treatment gives your brows a tamed and full look without the commitment. In essence, brow lamination is a perm for your brows. The procedure involves using a setting lotion to ensure that brows stay lifted and in place. Overall, brow lamination will last about 6 weeks and your next treatment shouldn’t be done any sooner. Otherwise, you run the risk of ruining your natural brows. Book a brow lamination with us for $95 today!

Lash Services at BOTTEGA.

Eyelash tints are a great way to add colour to your lashes without wearing mascara or getting a full set of lashes done. An eyelash tint is great for athletes or those who want a naturally darker and fuller look for their lashes. This procedure helps define your eyes and darken the hairs of your lashes using a specially formulated dye that’s safe to use near your eyes. People who have blonde hair or lightly coloured eyelashes will notice the biggest difference after having a lash tint done. On the other hand, people with dark hair or lashes may not see a very noticeable change in their appearance.

It is important that if you are planning on getting your lashes tinted that you do not have the procedure done too often. This can cause your lashes to become very dry and brittle. Instead, wait as many weeks as you can before going and booking a new appointment. Typically, lash tint will last about a month. However, it can last longer depending on a variety of personal factors. In addition, for anyone wondering, it is perfectly safe to use makeup on your lashes after having a tint done. If you are interested in having a lash tint done be sure to book an appointment with us now. Or contact us with your questions! We offer lash tinting services for $18 at BOTTEGA!

There are so many reasons why investing in hair extensions can be beneficial. If you are trying to decide whether or not you want to make this purchase. We’ve created a list to help you make the choice. Depending on what you are trying to achieve with your hair, extensions might be the right fit for you. Follow along below to learn more about the reasons why you might want to consider investing in hair extensions!

1. A Stylist in West Kelowna Can Help You Achieve Length With Extensions!

Have you always dreamed about having long hair, but never been able to achieve it? If yes, hair extensions could be a great choice for you. The frustration of your hair not growing past a certain point is tough. However, you can get your dream length of hair with extensions in a matter of minutes. This way you’ll finally be able to experience what it’s like to have long hair.

2. Hide a Bad Haircut With Hair Extensions.

Another reason hair extensions might come in handy is if you recently had a bad haircut. If you pulled out the scissors and decided to give yourself a fresh chop, but it went horribly wrong, hair extensions might be able to save your look. Whatever your hair horror story, extensions are a great way to hide any imperfections or mistakes. You can even use clip-in extensions while you wait for your natural hair to grow out. This way, you can avoid that awkward phase of it growing back to its usual length. And, clip-ins won’t hinder hair growth!

3. Try a New Colour With Hair Extensions in West Kelowna!

Trying a new hair colour can be intimidating. Especially if you have never strayed from your natural colour. If you are worried about it looking bad or damaging your hair, extensions could be a great option. Extensions are an easy and forgiving way to test out that hair trend you’ve always wanted to try. For instance, adding highlights or having ombre hair. Both of these can be achieved through hair extensions. Moreover, they can easily be taken out if you don’t like them. This way, you don’t have to go through the process of re-dyeing your hair, which could cause further damage.

4. Special Occasion Hair!

Hair extensions can help you achieve the exact look you want for a special occasion. Whether you are gearing up for a wedding, graduation, or red carpet event, hair extensions can be just what you need to spice up your hairstyle. Achieve your desired hair goals with extensions at your next event!

5. New Look and Added Volume.

For those who suffer from hair loss or thin hair, extensions can help boost your confidence. Hair extensions are a great way to get your hair back to what it once was. There are plenty of extensions available specifically for individuals who have experienced hair loss. Furthermore, if you have always had thin hair, extensions can help you achieve your desired thickness. All it takes is a few wefts of hair to reach your goal of thick, luscious locks.

Lastly, you can use extensions to change up your look. Hair extensions make any hairstyle appear more detailed and full. The added length and volume instantly liven up even the simplest of hairstyles. A basic braid can be transformed just by adding in a few wefts of hair. Furthermore, you can turn your hair extensions into accessories like a braided headband! Or, wrap an extension around your ponytail for a clean and elegant look. Check out this article on how to use your extensions as accessories.

Sustainability in hairdressing is an important part of reducing climate change. At BOTTEGA, we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that our salon is as environmentally friendly as possible. Haircare is an incredibly resource-intensive industry. Products, water consumption, and power are all heavily utilized in the haircare and beauty industry. It is so important to reflect on the impact our beauty routines have on the environment. By doing so, we can help combat climate change and other subsequent environmental issues. In this article, we will be discussing the importance of sustainability in a hair salon. As well as, how you can alter your beauty routine to create a smaller carbon footprint. Continue reading below to learn more!

Why Sustainability Matters in a West Kelowna Salon?

Hairstylists are in a unique position to encourage others to practice sustainability. The ways they interact with clients can help them see a greener alternative. From product consumption to washing habits, there’s always room for improvement. People are more likely to listen to what their hairdresser has to say, especially when it comes to beauty products. This makes it easy for them to advise people to use less water by washing their hair only a few times per week. And, instead of washing, they can tell people about the benefits of using dry shampoo or a leave-in conditioner. Thus, drastically reducing the amount of energy and hot water consumed in households.

Hot water makes up the majority of household emissions. The longer hot water is running and the hotter it is, the more energy is being consumed. This translates to a higher carbon footprint and more money. Therefore, people who take shorter showers, with a lower temperature are more likely to have a smaller carbon footprint. And, save more money!

It is also important for salons to be sustainable because they can help reduce waste. Hair clippings, product bottles, dye packaging, and all other waste have to go somewhere. However, with the right methods, salons can reduce waste and save excess products. At Bottega, we work with GreenCircle Salons to ensure that all our salon waste is either recycled or repurposed. They also provide us with special tools to make sure no product or dye goes to waste! Working with GreenCircle Salons has enabled us to become carbon neutral.

As a West Kelowna salon, it is so important to become sustainable. Having a green salon will help the business, the clients, and the planet! Educating each other on how to practice carbon-neutral habits is essential.

How You Can Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable!

For those looking to make a greener change in their beauty routine, we have a few sustainability tips. There are so many ways that you can lessen your impact on the environment. For instance, if you wash your hair 7-days a week, try cutting back to 3-days per week. This will help lessen your water consumption and product use. Instead, you can use a sustainable dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner.

Secondly, finding products that are sustainably made and have minimal packaging is so beneficial. Beauty items with long shelf lives and refillable options are much better for the environment. Ditch your single-use items and find long-lasting alternatives to minimize waste and cost. However, if you still want to use single-use products, make sure that the ingredients are natural and the packaging is either compostable or reusable. Many companies are changing their packaging to be sustainable, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make the switch!

Another way that you can make your beauty routine green, is by supporting the right brands. Finding brands that actively promote and practice sustainable habits. Purchasing products from places like BOTTEGA that are involved in recycling programs or local companies are two examples of choosing a more sustainable brand.

BOTTEGA On Going Green and Being an Example for A Sustainable Hair Salon in Kelowna

Going green is something that BOTTEGA prides itself on. As the world becomes more polluted, we began incorporating greener ways of operating. BOTTEGA hopes that other local companies will match our efforts in finding new ways to minimize their businesses’ environmental footprint.

We began our green efforts 6 months ago when we were certified as a Green Circle Salon! Green Circle Salons is a company that works with various beauty salons and spas to minimize salon waste. The excess hair colour, bottles, products, and other salon-related items don’t go to the landfill. We separate products and waste into bags for recycling. The bags are then shipped to Green Circle Salons to be processed and repurposed.

BOTTEGA Salon only sent 5 boxes of waste back to Green Circle Salons! That works out to less than 1 box per month! The total pounds of waste over the duration of being with GCS was a minuscule 116lbs.

Moreover, we had no excess colour diverted.

This is an astonishing statistic to achieve! In fact, even the GCS rep was shocked!

How did we do it?

In order to reduce the excess colour diverted to 0, we used a weighing system called Vish. Vish ensures that every bit of colour used is weighed and recorded. If too much product has been dispensed, then the program will adjust the amount dispensed for the next visit. Our owners are in love with this earth-friendly method for salon waste, stating that; “It’s been really fantastic,” and because of this we “haven’t had enough over pours to even fill a Green Circle return bag yet”!

West Kelowna’s BOTTEGA Salon is hopeful that other salons will follow suit. We would love to see more businesses make an effort to find more environmentally friendly options as we’ve done. Many companies are offering sustainable options for customers.

Hairstylists in West Kelowna are back again this month to clear up more misconceptions about all things hair! In a world of such demanding beauty standards, there are so many hoaxes that you must be wary of. Last month we covered a variety of misconceptions that we often hear from our clients.  In addition to this, we have decided to continue with this hot topic and shed even more light on other hair scams. Keep your hair feeling healthy and fresh by avoiding the following deceit 🙂

Continue reading below for more information on avoiding false hair tips.

Hairstylists in West Kelowna Warn About Over-Moisturizing.

There are hundreds of moisturizing products readily available for purchase. It feels as though beauty companies have designed a moisturizer for every body part these days. However, that doesn’t necessarily mean that our bodies need them. Oftentimes, we get clients who complain about having dry hair. Their answer to this problem is to slap all sorts of moisturizers on their hair. Although, this usually doesn’t remedy the problem. In fact, it typically worsens it. When it rains outside and your hair gets wet, there is routinely an eruption of frizz and loss of style. The same thing occurs in humid climates. Instead of reaching for a moisturizer or water-based product, grab something restorative or protective. These types of products are designed to close the cuticle so moisture can no longer ruin your good hair day! Talk to one of our hairstylists to find the perfect product for you.

Trimming ≠ Hair Growth.

It is commonly believed that trimming your hair will result in hair growth. Contrary to this popular belief, trimming your hair does not equal hair growth! We get all sorts of clients who frequently come in to receive trims. Despite their trimming efforts, there is usually less hair growth. If you want long hair, you need to give your hair time to grow out. It is recurrently assumed that hair growth starts from the ends. In actuality, hair growth starts from the scalp. People who maintain a healthy scalp will have healthy hair and more growth. Trimming will give the appearance that your hair looks healthier. However, if you trim at the same rate your hair grows, you won’t see any difference in length.

Complaints about hair growth are common while clients are having their roots touched up. If you have re-growth at your root, then your hair is growing. Though, this could be a good indicator to look at the ends and get a good cut. Split ends will continue to split and make it seem as though the hair is not growing. Also, be cautious of how hot you set your heat tools. And please use a heat protectant!

Hairstylists in West Kelowna Urge Clients to Keep it Natural!

The temptation to switch up your hair and fight your natural style can be strong. Our hairstylists find that people are generally more content when they keep their natural hair. Fighting your curly or pin-straight locks usually results in unhappiness. If you have thick, thin, coarse, curly, or straight hair, it is better to work with what you have. Forcing your hair to do something unnatural can result in damage and cost more money. Most people experience better growth results when they leave their hair natural. For best results, we recommend embracing what you have! A great cut and/or colour can satisfy that craving for change without harming the integrity of your luscious locks. Come to BOTTEGA Salon today to get a style you’ll love!

My Hair is Immune to my Shampoo & Conditioner.

Did you find the holy grail of shampoo and conditioner and they suddenly stopped working? If this is the case, we’re here to assure you they still work just the same. However, there are a variety of factors that may give the appearance that your hair has become “immune”. Hair products like your shampoo and conditioner can react with weather conditions. Often, this will make it seem as though your hair is drier than usual, or maybe oilier. Dry and humid climates are usual culprits of these hair troubles. If your favourite products are changing the natural pH balance of your hair, it can produce the effect that your soaps aren’t as effective. Using quality products is essential in hair health. Washing your hair too often can also strip your hair of its natural oils and properties, thus affecting its appearance.

Fall is here, and the hair trends for this lovely season are some of the best yet! If you’re eager to make a change or switch up your look, a new style is the way to go. It’s the least, most permanent – yet still, a quite permanent way to symbolize the new you. Fall 2021 is coming with all sorts of new trends and looks to spice up your cheveux. There is sure to be a look for every person this season. Read along to discover what styles are going to be all the rage this winter and fall!

Spice up Your Haircut in West Kelowna With Some Fun Accessories!

Accessories are going to become a staple in your hair-dos. They are an inexpensive, and chic way to heighten your style without changing your cut or colour. There are 8 specific accessories that you’re going to want to get your hands on. First up, are hair clips. Literally, any clip will do. Most notably claw clips – as we’ve seen in the past few seasons. Another good clip to have on hand is a hair slide. Hair slides are great if you want a sophisticated, yet effortless look. These come in all shapes and sizes. Moreover, these clips can be found at almost any drugstore or retail store.

While you’re shopping, you may want to pick up a headband…or three. It’s time to channel your inner Blair Waldorf and add a headband into your style. In addition, headbands also give the illusion of volume without having to spend hours teasing and blowdrying.

Next, we have kerchiefs or headscarves. These are great for that third or fourth-day hair. You can easily hide a greasy scalp and still wear your hair down with a kerchief. Consider purchasing silk or cloth ones for a bougie look. You’ll have people fooled that you haven’t washed your hair in four days.

Funky Hair Parts Are Totally In Right Now.

Do remember when you were a toddler and your hair got parted in zig-zags? If yes, it’s your time to shine! Zig-zag parts are back and we highly encourage those who’ve never had one to try it out. Many celebs are putting a refreshing new touch on the zig-zag look. For instance, Bella Hadid styled her funky part into a messy up-do for a revamped take on this outlandish hairstyle. Or, check out Dixie Damellio. She styled her wide zig-zag part into a slicked-back pony for a fun and chic take on this old style.

Ask your stylist to give you a zig-zag part next time you get a haircut in West Kelowna. Or, try it out on your own. All it takes is a rat-tail comb and a little bit of patience. Be sure to tag us in your attempts with the hashtag #bottegasalon.

Cut it off and Dye it Blonde at your next Haircut in West Kelowna.

Bobs are a classic hairstyle, but this fall they are back and better than ever. Cut it all off and enjoy the weight being lifted off your shoulders – literally! Bobs are a very cute style that we think screams fall and winter. They give people an academic, smart look. Additionally, you will save money on shampoo and conditioner with a bob. Give a short hair a try today and book a haircut in West Kelowna.

Another way people are spicing up their hair is by dying it icy blonde. Take a hint from Disney’s Elsa and dye that bob icy blonde. Or keep your length and switch up the colour. Icy blonde hair is so reminiscent of winter and the cool weather. Embody the seasons changing with this truly epic hair colour.
