Growing long and gorgeous hair doesn’t happen overnight. It requires time, patience, and dedication. If you have goals of growing out your hair, practicing healthy hair habits is essential. Developing a routine that ensures you take proper care of your locks is a great place to start your hair growth journey. On average, most people’s hair only grows ¼ to ½ of an inch per month. This means it can take several months or even years to achieve the length you desire, depending on your starting point and your hair care practices. To help you get a better idea of how to grow out your hair, Bottega, the best hair salon West Kelowna, is going to share some of our greatest hair growth tips. We believe that with the right care and attention, everyone can achieve the luscious locks they dream of.

Best Hair Salon West Kelowna on Growing Your Locks

If you’ve ever been to a hair salon, you’ve probably heard that trimming your hair every 6-8 weeks promotes hair growth. However, this idea is somewhat dated. For those with hair that is already past shoulder length, cutting your hair this often is overkill.  The only time you should be cutting your hair this regularly is if you have very short hair that needs to be shaped. Otherwise, getting a trim every three months will do the trick! So, save your money and reinvest in more effective hair growth techniques like healthy eating.

What you put into your body plays a huge role in the health and appearance of your hair. Nourishing your body with the right vitamins and nutrients can seriously impact the speed at which your hair grows. Diets that are rich in iron,  b12, vitamin D, riboflavin, protein, and collagen are more likely to help with hair growth. If you struggle to get enough of any of these nutrients, taking supplements to help you reach your goals could be worthwhile. Talk with your doctor or healthcare professional about taking a hair vitamin supplement to improve the strength and length of your locks!

We know that a lot of our clients don’t want to hear this, but growing out your hair often means leaving it natural. It’s challenging for our hair to be in its healthiest state when it’s dyed or constantly being fried by heat tools. So, if you want the best shot at long, luscious locks, it might be time to ditch the heat tools and hair dye. Overuse of heat tools on hair can damage strands causing severe breakage. Moreover, using hair dyes can affect the strength and thickness of your hair due to the chemicals inside most permanent hair dye formulas.

What Else Can You Do to Promote Hair Growth?

At the best hair salon West Kelowna, we also recommend that you do your best to protect your hair at bedtime. This means investing in a silk pillowcase to help minimize friction, tugging and tangling that causes hair breakage. It also means avoiding going to bed with wet hair. If you must sleep with wet hair, braid it before your slumber to minimize damage and protect the strands. Furthermore, ensure that you are getting your beauty sleep. Resting between 7-9 hours per night is essential for your hair’s growth and overall health.

Another way to promote hair growth is to ensure that you are actively trying to minimize stress in your life. Chronic stress has been scientifically proven to lead to hair loss. In some people, when under severe stress, hair follicles can enter a resting phase where they shed hair instead of growing new strands. This is what causes the appearance of hair loss. However, it is possible to recover and prevent stress-related hair loss. Some tips to do so include regular exercise, healthy eating, mindfulness, and making time for activities that you love.

The last piece of advice that we can give you as you work towards growing out your hair is to find products with good ingredients. Many of our everyday products contain harmful chemicals that can inhibit hair growth. For instance, if you turn over your bottle of shampoo or conditioner there’s a good chance that they both contain sulfates. Sulphates can be very damaging to your hair as they tend to strip away the natural oils that your hair produces. This ends up leaving you with brittle locks that break more easily and an irritated scalp. Ask your hairdresser what shampoo and conditioner they’d recommend for your hair if you’re interested in a healthier option.

  1. A Great Shampoo/Conditioner Set

There’s no better gift when it comes to hair care than a great shampoo and conditioner set. While drugstore sets certainly do the job, they can sometimes cause damage to your hair. A high-quality shampoo and conditioner will ensure that your hair and scalp look as healthy as can be. Another benefit is that you’ll prevent excessively dry or oily hair. Certain shampoos and conditioners can also aid in hair growth and prevent the loss of that salon colour. Check out some of our favourites in-store!

  1. Hair Serums

With summer on its way, a good hair serum can help to manage the dry Okanagan weather. The right hair serum will help to smooth hair strands and protect them from heat damage. This is especially important for anyone who loves to spend time outdoors. Our salon’s favourite brands carry a number of awesome serums for every hair type and activity level. Whether they love to sunbathe or hike the tallest mountains, we’ve got a serum for you to gift.  Visit us in-store for recommendations on our most loved serums.

  1. A Heat Protectant

Are they using heat tools more than they should? Are they using a heat protectant? If you’ve answered yes to one of these questions, a good heat protectant could be a great gift idea! Heat protectants are ideal for anyone who loves their curling wand or flatiron a bit too much.

Give the Gift of Self-Care

  1. Silk Pillowcase

If fancy products aren’t their thing, consider gifting a silk pillowcase. Silk pillowcases are amazing for keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. They’re also great for preventing bedhead and help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermatologists and skincare experts recommend sleeping on silk to help maintain healthy skin. Even if these advantages don’t convince you that they need a silk pillowcase, know that they are also incredible for minimizing dust and bacteria. So, if they’re sensitive to common allergens this could be a game-changer for their health!

  1. A New Hair Tool

Has their hairdryer seen better days? Are they still using the same flatiron from the 80s? If so, this might be a good time to gift an upgrade. There are so many heat tools on the market that you might be overwhelmed trying to choose one. So, let’s give a quick rundown of what makes a good heat tool. First off, for wands and flat irons, anything made with ceramic or titanium is ideal. Secondly, having a temperature setting is life-changing for preventing heat damage and customization. Thirdly, search for something with a good warranty or return policy in case something breaks.

  1. A Salon Experience

If none of these haircare gifts suit their style, consider giving the gift of a day at the salon. This is a great way to give them the gift of self-care. If they’re not into getting their hair done, BOTTEGA has a wide range of other services to choose from. For example, lash and brow tints, waxing, and laminations. Check out all the haircare services that we offer on our website and determine which service they will love most!

Hair is a critical part of anyone’s identity. Our locks often showcase our personality, reflect our style, and contribute to our sense of confidence. As such, signs of hair thinning and recession can be alarming. This is particularly true for women. As a woman, healthy hair can be a key way in which femininity is expressed. This can lead to emotional challenges for women who must grapple with the reality of their changing hair. If you or someone you know is experiencing hair loss or thinning, it can be hard to find the right information. In this article, we strive to change this by offering information to help you better understand hair loss/recession, why it happens, treatment options, and more.

Follow along below to read our women’s guide to hair loss.

Making Sense of Hair Loss as a Woman

Hair loss is commonly thought of as a male problem. However, as Harvard recently noted, it also affects roughly a third of women. With this being said, men and women do not experience hair loss in the same way. For a man, hair loss usually means going bald, whereas, for a woman, hair loss usually means thinning hair without going bald. There are a variety of causes that can be attributed to hair loss and recession in women. For example, medications, wearing certain hairstyles, and high stress levels. Other underlying causes can include a shift in hormones, an inflammatory condition, or even a thyroid problem. What’s more, is that hair loss can be genetic.

One of the biggest culprits for hair loss in women is female-pattern hair loss (androgenic alopecia). Women who suspect that they have this condition can usually tell by a few key signs. The first of which, is hairline recession, whereby the hair recedes at the forehead. Another sign of hair loss is a wider hair part. It often manifests as a gradual change in the texture and density of the hair. Moreover, a widening part is common in women over 40 or those experiencing menopause.  The third sign is patchy hair loss. This means the thinning or loss of hair in more specific areas on the scalp.

Beyond female-pattern hair loss, there are a variety of other common causes. For instance, the overuse of damaging hair products or consistent application of heat tools (hair dryers, flat irons, curling wands, etc). Factors such as nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances can also lead to thinning hair.

Women’s Hair Thinning Treatments and Preventative Measures

For some of us, hair loss as we age is inevitable. However, this does not mean that you can’t take measures to try and prevent the onset or improve the outlook. Doing simple things like taking care of your health, eating a well-balanced diet, and restricting the use of heat tools can all help with hair loss. If you lead a stressful lifestyle due to work or other circumstances, finding a way to minimize or cope with this stress is critical. Too much stress can impact your hair and overall health. Taking multivitamins and avoiding tight hairstyles (we’re looking at you, Ms. slick back trend) can also be of benefit.

For those who are experiencing hair loss and are looking for a treatment option, it’s important to visit your doctor for a formal diagnosis. Treatments vary depending on the cause of your hair loss, the kind of hair loss you’re experiencing, and your medical history. For some women, simply addressing the underlying condition causing the hair loss can improve symptoms. For others, it may take medication to see a change in hair thickness. A popular hair growth drug is Rogaine which can help treat hair loss and promote regrowth. Other options that women are considering include red light therapy.

If medical treatments don’t work for your hair/body, there are other ways to cope with the loss. Cosmetic options to help women overcome hair loss are extensive. From wigs to hair transplantations the spectrum of cosmetic treatments for hair is vast.

In the Okanagan, the weather still hasn’t started to warm yet. After a mild, but cool winter, you may be wondering how you can ensure that you hair is refreshed for spring. After spending so much time in indoor heating, and out in the cool winter air, your hair may not be looking as lively as it once did. Not to mention, with the drier climate, you may be wondering how to eliminate static from your locks. In this article, we are going to cover all of these topics. Follow along below for tips and tricks on how to rejuvenate your hair for spring and beat static electricity once and for all!

West Kelowna Haircare Tips for Healthy Spring Locks

haircare tips from a west kelowna hair salon

After a dry winter, one of the best ways to breathe life back into your hair is by using hydrating products. For instance, hair masks, deep conditioners, and gentle shampoos. Consider investing in products that aren’t harsh on your scalp and that leave some of your body’s natural oils behind.

Additionally, washing your hair less frequently can help mitigate dryness if you’re noticing a lack of moisture in your locks. Aim for washing about 2-3 times per week for depending on your hair type and activity level. Avoiding over-washing can ensure your hair keeps some of its natural oils, preventing increased dryness.

If you’re serious about healthifying your hair this spring, consider taking a break from your heat tools. This is one of the best and easiest ways to restore your hair. However, if you absolutely must use them, make sure that you apply a reputably branded heat protectant to lock in moisture and prevent damage. Also, do your best to keep the temperature of your hot tools to a minimum!

Another way that you can revive your hair for the new season is by getting a trim. Visiting the salon to have the dead ends of your hair taken off can help your hair grow longer, feel healthier, and look renewed.

Besides using the right products and limiting heat, you can ensure that your hair is happy and healthy by leading a balanced lifestyle. This means eating well, exercising, staying hydrated, and limiting your stress levels. After all, too much stress is scientifically proven to cause hair loss in some people. This is because the hair follicles remain in an extended resting phase when the body produces too much cortisol. Consequently, this results in inhibited hair growth.

How to Beat Staticky Hair in 2024?

Staticky hair is the collective bain of our existence. Waking up in the morning to your hair standing on its ends is never a good feeling. This phenomenon is often caused by dry air in your environment. Generally, this is exacerbated by things rubbing against your hair like your pillows, hats, toques, or even your brush. During the cooler weather, the air holds less moisture which in turn leads to less moisture in your hair. This results in the perfect conditions for your hair to get staticky.

While you might think that this is just a winter issue and it will be solved with warmer weather, we regret to inform you that this is not the case. In Kelowna, the summers are undoubtedly hot, but they are also very dry. Not to mention most places run air conditioners all summer long to combat the sweltering temperatures. These two factors contribute to the same favourable conditions for static electricity in your hair.

If you want to get rid of this staticky sensation in your locks, there are a few quick remedies to try. The first one is to run a dryer sheet over your hair. Alternatively, you can use a metal comb or brush to break up static electricity from your hair. Some people say that running a metal hanger over your locks can do the trick as well! Another solution is to use hairspray or leave-in conditioner to eliminate static and keep your hair in place.

If none of these tips works, you can always resort to a trusty up-do to keep static hair at bay and out of the way! Claw clips, high ponies, and braids are all great options to your hair out of your face on a staticky day.

Maintaining coloured hair can be a chore. But, with the right products and a few tips, it doesn’t have to be. In last month’s blog post, we went over some of this year’s most anticipated hair trends—some of which included dyed hair. If you’re considering experimenting with the trendy hair colours of 2024, its important that you know how to keep the colour fresh until your next salon visit. To help you keep the colour of your locks vibrant, we have compiled a list of daily habits and stylist-recommended products. Follow along below to learn more about caring for coloured hair.

What Habits Can I Adopt to Preserve My Dyed Hair?

  1. Turn Down the Temp of Your Shower

A good habit to get into when you have freshly coloured hair is to keep your shower temperature at a minimum. However, this does not mean that you need to take a freezing cold shower. Instead, try keeping the heat warm and then rinsing any products out with cooler water. Showering at a hot temperature can cause the colour molecules in your hair to rinse out of your locks. For those with red hair, this effect is amplified, because red dyes tend to have larger molecules. So, if you’re following this year’s red hair trends, this is a tip you’ll want to keep in mind.

  1. Use Products Without Sulfates

If you’re a frequent hair dyer, you’re likely to know that sulphates can be enemy number one when it comes to maintaining your colour. If your shampoo and conditioner are packed with these chemicals, consider opting for a gentler formula. There are several hair wash products available that do not contain high amounts of sulphates. This will ensure that you prevent your new hair colour from fading. Regardless of whether your hair is dyed or not, switching to a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner will keep your hair healthier!

  1. Avoid Excess Heat

Another way to keep your hair colour fresh is by avoiding excessive heat. This means ditching your heat tools when possible. Your flat iron and curling wand are major culprits for removing moisture and colour from your hair. If you must use these tools, be sure to apply a heat protectant and keep the temperature of your tools on a low setting. Additionally, letting your hair air dry as opposed to blow drying it, can be of benefit!

Other Tips to Note

  1. Stay Out of Direct Sunlight

Ever wonder why vampires have such luscious locks? It’s because they stay out of the sunlight! Bad jokes aside, being sun-smart is a good habit to get into when caring for your coloured hair. Just the same as heat tools and hot showers can fade your hair, so can the sunshine. Exposing your locks to the harshness of the sun’s UV rays can give a brassy or bleached look. To avoid sun damage, wear a hat or stay in the shade if possible.

  1. Choose the Right Colour

If you want your hair to look vibrant without needing to do a ton of maintenance, it’s best to stick to shades that are within one to two depths of your natural hair colour. Doing so offers several benefits. For example, a more forgiving fade, less noticeable growth and a gentler dying process. This is especially true for those who want to go from dark to light shades or vice versa. By choosing a colour range that is close to your natural locks, you’ll be afforded more flexibility between hair appointments.

  1. Shampoo Less

Washing your hair less isn’t always the most appealing thought. However, avoiding your shampoo can be one of the easiest ways to keep your hair dye fresh for longer. The formula for most shampoos, no matter how gentle they are, can still cause the dye to be stripped from your locks. Shampoos are designed to clean your locks and strip away dirt and oil. Unfortunately, during this process, some loss of colour is inevitable. Washing your hair less frequently and using dry shampoo in between washes is a good strategy to take on. Talk with your stylist about what dry shampoos and washing products they recommend for keeping your hair colour bright!

2024 is here, and with it has come several new trends for hair. From cuts to accessories, there’s a lot to know if you’re planning on switching up your style in the months ahead. Last year, we saw the end of the curtain bang, the rise of the bob, and a notable shift towards emphasizing hair care. In 2024, many of last year’s trends are here to stay, with a twist of their own. From boxy layers to 90s influence, there’s something for everyone in this year’s hair trends. To help you discover which 2024 style is best for you, we are going to be going over the most anticipated hair trends of the year. Follow along below to see how you can achieve this year’s trends with a West Kelowna haircut!

What West Kelowna Haircut Should You Receive in 2024?

This year we’re seeing all sorts of new trends in haircuts that are largely influenced by decades passed. However, a new trend this year will be embracing one’s natural locks. This is a trend that started to kick off in 2023 with the hair care movement. People want now more than ever to love their hair—no matter the texture or colour! With more and more individuals asking for wash-and-go styles and colours, it’s evident that natural hair is in this year.

If your natural hair doesn’t do it for you, don’t fret! There are plenty of other hair trends set to take the world by storm in 2024. For instance, angular bobs. An angular bob is the perfect style to achieve that cool, edgy look that is all the rage right now. However, this isn’t the only bob that is going to be popular this year. We are also seeing the comeback of the soft bob, 90s bob and the lob. We suppose it’s safe to say that short hair will be a notable fad in 2024.

As for colours, the biggest trend is going to be honey blonde. You’ve seen this colour on celebrities and the runway, and it’s now making its way into mainstream culture. If you have blonde or brunette hair, warm and honey-toned finishes are about to become your best friends. This colour is undeniably classic and looks even better with some light, creamy blonde highlights.

Another colour set to sweep the nation is red. But, not just any red, we are talking about the rich, decadent reds as seen, most notably, on The Little Mermaid. Whether it’s a true red, an auburn tone, or a copper shine, red will be everywhere this season.

Hair Accessories You’re Going to Want & Styles to Recreate

With haircare taking such a focus in 2024, this year is all about accessorizing your natural locks. Near the end of 2023, we saw a rise in the popularity of headbands. Like it or not, headbands are here to stay in 2024. So, get ready to channel your inner Blair Waldorf and make the most out of the prep school vibes. If you’re not sure what kind of headbands to invest in, try out a sleek, black plastic style, or a cotton tube one for added comfort.

Another accessory that people everywhere are buying, is the hair bow. Bows fit right in with this year’s ballet-core trends and we can’t get enough of it. A hair bow is a great way to add a touch of femininity to your style. If you want to recreate this trend, there are so many ways to do so. For instance, we’ve seen people tying ribbons at the end of their braids or top of their ponytail for that ballet-inspired look. The best part of the bow trend is how easy it is to recreate without spending a dime!

Finally, as far as styling goes, 2024 could be the year of the up-do. With intricate buns and elevated ponies, there is so much creative potential for this year’s styles. If up-dos aren’t your thing, leave it down and style your locks in big voluminous curls. After all, runway hair is going nowhere in the new year—the bigger the blowout, the better!

Keeping your hair in a healthy state is an important part in making sure your hair looks its best! Hair is an essential part of who we are as human beings. It represents our personalities, shows off our interests, and sets us apart from others. But, in order to keep our hair in a healthy condition, it’s crucial that we do more than just style and wash our locks.  The simplest way to achieve healthy hair is by getting regular haircuts. Having a cut or trim every six to eight weeks is a great way to prevent breakage. In this article, we will be going over the benefits of receiving a haircut at our salon in West Kelowna on a regular basis. Follow along below to learn more!

Benefits of Regular Haircuts at a Salon in West Kelowna

  1. Minimize/Prevent Damage

By having your hair cut on a regular basis, you will do wonders for the health of your hair. Trimming your locks every few weeks will keep split ends at bay and improve your cuticles. In turn, this will create a better, healthier hair texture. Avoiding regular haircuts can cause your hair to thin due to split end issues. This is hard to repair once the damage is done. So, keep your hair shiny and full with routine trims.

  1. Increase Growth

Letting a stylist chop off some of your hair every now and then is actually a great way to boost hair growth. While it may seem counterintuitive, cutting off the damaged parts of your hair will make room for more healthy growth. Of course, it is still important that you wash and moisturize your scalp. However, if you’ve been wanting your hair to grow, a regular trim might be the secret to achieving your desired length! Visit one of our stylists in West Kelowna for more information about hair growth.

  1. Maintain Style and Length

Another benefit of having your hair cut often is that you get to maintain a specific style and length. If you have bangs, you’ll know that getting your hair trimmed often is essential in maintaining the style. Furthermore, for those with layered hair, having regular cuts is a much-needed part of retaining the layers. A regular haircut can also be of benefit for those with short hair so that they can preserve the perfect length!

Additional Perks of Regular Salon Visits

  1. Your Hair is Easier to Manage

Going to the salon for a regular trim makes it much easier to manage. Detangling your hair becomes that much simpler when your hair is even and strong. Take back those precious minutes you spend detangling your hair and spend them on something you enjoy. In addition to easier detangling, healthy hair is also less frizzy, smoother, and responds better to styling. Simply cutting your hair on a frequent basis can make your morning routine that much more effortless.

  1. It’s a Form of Self-Care

Visiting the salon is a great way to incorporate self-care into your routine. Hair is a large part of people’s confidence – no matter what gender you identify as. For centuries, hair has been a primary way that humans express their personality. According to an article by Healthline, our hair has a direct impact on our mental well-being. It is thought that bad hair can impact our mood because of the way it changes how we perceive ourselves. If this sounds like something you can relate to, it might be worth it to invest in your hair. We wrote all about haircare as a form of self-care in a blog post last year, and we encourage you to check it out!

  1. Chat With Your Stylist(s)

One of the best parts of visiting the salon is that you get to chat with your stylists. And, we are happy to give you our professional opinion about the best ways to style, care for, and treat your locks!

Hair Stylist in West Kelowna Goes Over Curling Short Hair (Steps 1-4)

  1. Start With Clean Hair

In order to get the best results, it’s a good idea to start with freshly washed locks. Styling with dirty or unwashed hair can prevent the curls from looking their best. If your hair is oily, your curls will likely begin to unravel and won’t hold their shape as well. Once you’ve washed your hair, be sure to let it dry before styling.

  1. Use Your Favourite Heat Protectant

For heat-styled curls, you will need to use a heat protectant. We’ve said it once, and we will say it again, heat protectant is a step you cannot skip! Our stylists can recommend a number of different heat protectants if you’re not sure what to use. By using heat protectant you will preserve the health and longevity of your hair.

  1. Section Your Locks

Now that you have cleaned your hair and applied your favourite heat protectant, it’s time to section off your hair. Sectioning your hair will help achieve better volume, evenness, and overall consistency. You can section off your hair by using hair clips, bobby pins, or elastic bands. The smaller the sections you create, the better.

  1. Choose Your Favourite Curling Tool

Next, you’ll want to determine what kind of curl you are trying to achieve. Curling wands, curling irons, and flat irons are the most common choices for curling your hair. Curling wands and irons are flexible options for those with short hair. This is because they often come in a variety of barrel sizes. Thus, helping you achieve different looks. Bigger barrels are good for beachy waves, and smaller barrels are good for tight curls. Additionally, both tools are very easy to use. By comparison, a flat iron has a slight learning curve in order to achieve the same kind of style.

Curling Short Hair Continued (Steps 5-7)

  1. Methods for Curling

Before you start to curl, you need to know what temperature to set your heat tool. For those with finer, delicate hair, set your device to a maximum of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. For those with thicker, coarser hair, 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit should do the trick! Once you start curling your hair, try to keep the heat on for the least amount of time. When you’re ready to release your hair from the curler, hold the curl against your head for a few seconds until the hair becomes cool. This will help the curl set. Once you’re done, you can spray your hair with hairspray (for longer-lasting curls) and brush through the curls with a paddle brush or your fingers to give a more effortless look.

  1. Heatless Methods

If you don’t want to damage your hair with heat, we hear you! Heatless styling is a much healthier option anyway. The only downside is that heatless curls usually take several hours or overnight before they are ready. For most heatless styles, it is good to have damp hair. So, spray your hair with some water or let it partially air dry after your shower before beginning. Once you’re ready, start sectioning off your locks. Then you can braid, twist, use rollers, or try sock curls for different results. After six to eight hours you should be ready to go! Heatless styles are great time savers for the morning.

  1. Styling and Finishing Touches

Once you’ve achieved the curls of your dreams, it’s time to style. Using additional products like hairspray or salt spray can help them hold their shape all day long. Talk with your stylist about what kind of products you should put in your hair after curling!
