Happy holidays to everyone!

The holidays are quickly approaching and for the month of November, we’d like to focus on haircare as a form of self-care. Currently, we live in a world where overdoing it is the norm. And, during the holiday season, everyone tends to overextend themselves a little bit more than usual. This is a recipe for exhaustion. Self-care isn’t so much about wasting hours of your day in a bath or spending hundreds of dollars on going to the spa. Instead, it is about making healthier, mindful choices and nurturing good habits.

For the average person, free time is minimal. And, it comes as no surprise that self-care is probably not on the top of your to-do list during these precious moments. However, taking 5-10-minutes each day can help improve your stress levels and change your mood for the better. There are many ways that you can incorporate self-care into your daily/weekly routine. In this article, we will be talking about hair care as a form of self-care. Continue reading below to learn more about how hair care can be used as a form of self-care!

How is Haircare in West Kelowna Self-care?

Hair is a large part of people’s confidence – no matter what gender they identify as. For centuries, hair has been a primary way that humans express their personalities. According to an article by Healthline, our hair has a direct impact on our mental well-being. It is thought that bad hair can impact our mood because of the way it changes how we perceive ourselves. If this sounds like something you can relate to, it might be worth it to invest in haircare. This does not mean spraying in dry shampoo as you fly out of the door.

Haircare means spending some time each day or week to breathe some life back into your hair. This may mean investing in a few new products or incorporating ones you already have into your routine. It could also mean finding a home remedy for your hair’s biggest problems (ie: breakage, dryness, frizz). Or, simply finding products that amplify your hair’s natural beauty. Whatever it may be, haircare is a crucial part of self-care.

Ways to Incorporate Haircare into your Routine.

There are so many ways that you can turn haircare into a form of self-care. One of the best ways you can do so is by giving yourself a good scalp massage. A scalp massage is a great way to release tension, boost blood circulation to the face/head, and promote hair growth. Moreover, as a bonus, it feels amazing! Grab your favourite shampoo and massage it into your scalp or use a scalp massage brush for added benefits. This simple task can be done on your hair-wash days and takes only a few minutes to complete – Sounds worth it to us

Another way that you can do haircare, is by investing in some essential oils. Oils are key to hair health and appearance. And, they smell amazing! Choose an oil that will best benefit your hair and massage it into your scalp and the ends of your hair. It is best to use warm oil for this process. However, make sure you test the temperature of your oil before applying it to your scalp because your scalp is more sensitive to temperature than other parts of your body.

Finally, if products and massages aren’t really your thing, consider getting a haircut once a month. Or, waking up a few minutes earlier to ensure that you can style your hair exactly how you want it. After all, the way your hair looks is the most important to your confidence.

Although self-care is not as critical to our lives as healthy foods and exercise, it can help mitigate tension in our day-to-day lives. Remaining calm and stress-free will improve your physical and mental well-being.

Determining how often you need to wash your hair is seriously confusing. There are so many answers out there on the Internet that it can be hard to find what’s right for you. Some individuals swear by washing their hair every day. And, others find it beneficial to wash their hair only once per week. However, it is important to note, that everyone’s hair type and lifestyle are different. Both of these factors play a key role in how often you should wash your hair. In this article, our West Kelowna hair stylists are going to be going over everything you need to figure out how often you should wash your hair. Follow along below for more information.

What’s Your Hair Type?

The first step in determining how often your hair needs to be washed is finding out what hair type you have. Is it coarse? Fine? Is it healthy? Damaged? Do you have a lot of hair? In order to find this out grab a single strand of your hair and feel it. If you have trouble feeling the strand of hair, then you have fine hair. If you can feel it, you have medium hair. And, if the strand you grabbed feels thick or coarse, you have thick hair. Despite what your hair feels like, you can still have thick hair that is sparse. Similarly, you can have an abundance of fine hair that makes your hair appear ‘thick’.

The other test you’ll need to complete is the stretch test. This test is done to find out the current condition of your hair. To do this test, stretch a single strand of hair between your fingers. If the hair breaks right away, then your hair lacks strength and elasticity. However, if your hair stretches to half of its original length, then your hair is healthy and highly elastic.

With all of this in mind, you need to also consider that outside factors such as weather, lifestyle, mood, and health all factor into the condition and type of your hair. It is important that you perform these tests when you think your hair type has changed.

Washing Advice For Fine Hair, Coarse Hair, and Medium Hair.

Those with finer hair texture should consider washing their hair daily or every other day. This is because fine-haired individuals have more oil glands on their scalp, making their hair oily much faster. While it is commonly assumed that washing your hair daily is the root of issues like dryness and poor condition, it is often the products you use that make the difference. Good quality shampoo and conditioner can help you maintain luscious hair despite washing it often. Also, limiting heat tools and applying heat protectants when necessary can help keep your hair healthy.

People with medium hair are more likely to be able to go a few days without a wash. However, this is often dependent on where you live. In general, those with medium hair should consider washing their hair 2-3 times per week (or every other day). Your hair may change based on the seasons and climate which can affect the frequency with that you wash your locks. So, keep this in mind before sticking to a strict routine!

Lastly, for coarse-haired individuals, washing your hair infrequently is best. Dissimilar to fine and medium hair, coarse hair can go much longer before it shows signs of oiliness. Furthermore, coarse hair that is washed too often can be much harder to manage because it may get too dry. Those with hair types between 3a to 4c should consider washing their hair once every two weeks. This is because 3a-4c hair runs a bit on the dry side. With this being said, it is important to consider your lifestyle when choosing your washing regime. For instance, those who frequent the gym, do sports, or work outdoors may want to wash their hair once per week to prevent sweat buildup.

There are lots to consider when trying to figure out how often to wash your hair. Most of the time it just comes down to trial and error. If you under-wash your hair you can cause just the same amount of damage as over-washing your hair. So, it is important that you find a hair-washing frequency that works for you. In addition, those with sensitive scalps need to be extra careful about their washing routine and what products they use. If you want to go longer between washes, invest in a good dry shampoo or find some up-dos that you can quickly throw together.

Sustainability in hairdressing is an important part of reducing climate change. At BOTTEGA, we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that our salon is as environmentally friendly as possible. Haircare is an incredibly resource-intensive industry. Products, water consumption, and power are all heavily utilized in the haircare and beauty industry. It is so important to reflect on the impact our beauty routines have on the environment. By doing so, we can help combat climate change and other subsequent environmental issues. In this article, we will be discussing the importance of sustainability in a hair salon. As well as, how you can alter your beauty routine to create a smaller carbon footprint. Continue reading below to learn more!

Why Sustainability Matters in a West Kelowna Salon?

Hairstylists are in a unique position to encourage others to practice sustainability. The ways they interact with clients can help them see a greener alternative. From product consumption to washing habits, there’s always room for improvement. People are more likely to listen to what their hairdresser has to say, especially when it comes to beauty products. This makes it easy for them to advise people to use less water by washing their hair only a few times per week. And, instead of washing, they can tell people about the benefits of using dry shampoo or a leave-in conditioner. Thus, drastically reducing the amount of energy and hot water consumed in households.

Hot water makes up the majority of household emissions. The longer hot water is running and the hotter it is, the more energy is being consumed. This translates to a higher carbon footprint and more money. Therefore, people who take shorter showers, with a lower temperature are more likely to have a smaller carbon footprint. And, save more money!

It is also important for salons to be sustainable because they can help reduce waste. Hair clippings, product bottles, dye packaging, and all other waste have to go somewhere. However, with the right methods, salons can reduce waste and save excess products. At Bottega, we work with GreenCircle Salons to ensure that all our salon waste is either recycled or repurposed. They also provide us with special tools to make sure no product or dye goes to waste! Working with GreenCircle Salons has enabled us to become carbon neutral.

As a West Kelowna salon, it is so important to become sustainable. Having a green salon will help the business, the clients, and the planet! Educating each other on how to practice carbon-neutral habits is essential.

How You Can Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable!

For those looking to make a greener change in their beauty routine, we have a few sustainability tips. There are so many ways that you can lessen your impact on the environment. For instance, if you wash your hair 7-days a week, try cutting back to 3-days per week. This will help lessen your water consumption and product use. Instead, you can use a sustainable dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner.

Secondly, finding products that are sustainably made and have minimal packaging is so beneficial. Beauty items with long shelf lives and refillable options are much better for the environment. Ditch your single-use items and find long-lasting alternatives to minimize waste and cost. However, if you still want to use single-use products, make sure that the ingredients are natural and the packaging is either compostable or reusable. Many companies are changing their packaging to be sustainable, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make the switch!

Another way that you can make your beauty routine green, is by supporting the right brands. Finding brands that actively promote and practice sustainable habits. Purchasing products from places like BOTTEGA that are involved in recycling programs or local companies are two examples of choosing a more sustainable brand.

For many, heat tools are an essential part of creating salon-quality hairstyles. However, as we’ve noted in a few of our articles, using heat tools can seriously damage those luscious locks. Especially, if you forget your heat protectant! Blow dryers, flat irons, and curling wands, all pose the risk of ruining your hair. Sadly, once your hair has been damaged by heat, the only way to mend it is to cut it off. Despite the risks involved, hair stylists in West Kelowna know how important using heat tools can be in a person’s morning routine. This is why our team at Bottega Salon wanted to share with you some of the best heatless hair tools. Discover your new favourite styling tool in the article below, so you can ditch that blow dryer once and for all!

A Quick Recap on Heat Damage:

In case you missed the FAQ we posted on our blog, we wanted to give a quick recap on heat damage. Heat tools are great when you want to transform the uneven creases in your hair into Instagram-worthy styles. Although every time you reach for the heat tools, you risk the health of your hair. Any instance where your hair comes into contact with heat, small holes are formed in the protective layer. Over time, this can cause breakage, frizziness, split ends and permanent damage. It should be noted that temperatures above 450 degrees can cause permanent damage. But, like most things in life, it’s all about moderation. If you’re grabbing the curling iron every morning, your hair will likely be burnt and damaged. Instead, using heat tools sparingly and on a low setting will ensure healthy, happy, hair.

But, what if you want big, bouncy curls every day of the week (without the help of your trusty curling wand or blow-dryer)?

Best Heatless Hair Styling Tools From Hairstylists in West Kelowna!

The answer is simple. You can still achieve that voluminous hair you adore with heatless hair tools! Heatless hair styling has been around forever. And, the products have only gotten better and easier to use since their invention. Check out the list below to discover your new favourite styling tool.

1. Flexi Rods

Flexi rods are great if you want to create defined ringlets. They bend into almost any shape and remain secured in your hair without the help of clips or pins. Moreover, they can be used on a variety of different types of hair. Flexi rods are especially great for creating definition in those with hair that is already curly in texture. In order to use these versatile rods, simply section your hair into 1-2 inch pieces and roll vertically from end to root. Make sure your hair is slightly damp when doing so. Once the hair is dry, take out the rods and brush through your hair with your fingers.

2. Foam Rollers and Pillow Soft Rollers

Leaving your hair to set overnight is one of the best ways to achieve voluminous hair and/or curls. Not only this, but it also saves you time in the morning. Instead of waking up extra early with messy slept-on hair, enjoy a longer sleep and runway-ready hair.

Foam rollers are a seriously great addition to your heatless hair styling tool kit. Foam rollers are soft and spongy in texture, allowing you to sleep comfortably with them in. Make sure to keep the roller loose around your hairline to prevent pulling. Rollers are meant to be used on dry hair and should be rolled in different directions if a natural look is desired. When you are ready to take them out, unroll and use a large paddle brush to amp up the volume and texture.

If foam rollers aren’t your jam, pillow-soft rollers do just the trick. Pillow-soft rollers are one of the best overnight hairstyling tools. The supreme comfort and versatility make for perfect, crimp-free curls. Additionally, they can be used to create smooth waves, straight-to-curly styles, and add volume.

3. Velcro Hair Rollers

Velcro hair rollers are a great alternative to heat tools. They are easy to use, affordable, and work for almost all hair types and textures. Using velcro hair rollers allows you to achieve gorgeous curls and volume in a matter of minutes. Different sizes can be used to create different sizes of curls and volume.

In order to most effectively use velcro rollers, you’ll need a few extra products. For instance, some hairspray, styling cream, and some clips to hold it all in place. Starting with slightly damp hair, you’ll want to apply some styling cream and let it air dry. While the hair is still damp, you can start to roll your hair. Grab a section of hair as you would with a curling iron and spray it with hairspray. Then keep the hair pulled taught and inwards from the ends to the roots. Try and keep the hair from falling off the sides, as this creates tangles. After your hair is secured and rolled, leave it to set for 15-20 minutes. Once the time is up, unclip and pull out the rollers (avoid unrolling them) to reveal your perfectly styled hair.

Happy holidays to everyone!

From unwashed hair to hair loss, there’s a lot of misconceptions about taking care of your luscious locks. The Internet has thrown tons of false information about how to get the best hair. Most of these so-called ‘tips’ are beginning to see the light of day as misnomers. At Bottega Salon, our hairdressers in West Kelowna get asked tons of questions about hair. To help out our clientele, we wanted to dedicate an article to revealing the truth behind long-running hair misconceptions. Continue reading below to learn more about what ‘tricks’ are potentially destroying the health of your hair or are just plain silly!

The Biggest Hair Myths Exposed by Your Favourite Hairdressers in West Kelowna!

Unwashed hair makes dyeing easier.

This is probably our most common myth in the salon. Unwashed hair does not make dyeing easier or better or more protective. Hair that is lathered in product from days past, dirty, and/or oily will make the dye’s job much more difficult. Instead of being applied to a clean, blank canvas, it will have to work through the grime in order to take. Usually, this results in a patchier colouring job. You may end up needing to do a follow-up appointment or use more colour. Thus, meaning more money and time. It’s best to have clean hair before coming in to get your hair dyed.

Editorial hair can be done in one visit.

“I just want my hair to look like this photo of Kim. K. Can you do that?” Put simply, yes. However many clients who come in wanting editorial hair don’t realize how long this takes. The process involves, on average, 8-12 hours. Meaning multiple appointments over various weeks. Editorial hair is very much possible, but it’s very costly and time-consuming. It also is largely dependent on the current shape of your hair and what your hair history is. In summary, undertaking a major hair transformation will come with a higher price and a longer duration attached to the process.

I’m losing my hair!

Hairdressers in West Kelowna frequently see clients get freaked out that they’re losing their hair.

We’re here to put your concerns to rest because a little bit of hair loss is completely natural! Humans lose 50 – 200 strands of hair per day. The amount of hair you lose is largely determined by your hair type, how you wear your hair, and what activities you’re doing. Moreover, those with short and/or thin hair will lose around 50-100 hairs a day or less. Furthermore, people who have thick and/or long hair can lose 100-200 hairs per day. This is completely okay. It’s your body’s way of getting out with the old and in with the new.

Wearing a ponytail all day and then taking a shower, is a recipe for greater hair loss. This is because when your hair is up, it’s harder for it to shed naturally throughout the day. So, when you step in the shower and it appears as though it’s all falling out in chunks that’s likely why.

Split ends will heal.

hairstylists in west kelowna

No matter what magic formula you’ve bought, nothing is going to heal split ends except a great pair of scissors There is no special formula or trick. If you want to say goodbye to split ends, you need to bring out the snips. Trying to treat them will only result in the appearance of thinner hair and more split ends. Your hair is like a plant. You need to cut off the dead leaves in order to promote healthy growth.

Coconut oil works magic on your hair.

Coconut oil is great for hair…in the short term. Over time, if you continually use coconut oil, it will eventually repel water and healing products. Thus, making it very difficult for your hair to absorb amino acids that are so beneficial to the health of your hair. As it is with most treatments, serums, and masks, use them according to the direction of your hairstylist. When in doubt, follow the labels carefully and never overuse a product!
