Follow along below to get some inspiration on what to give this summer!

Products Everyone Loves to Receive!

Up their hair product game with a haircare gift from Bottega, it’s a great place to shop. We sell a range of products from texturizers to shampoos. You’ll also be excited to know that we only carry the best haircare brands. Shop KMS, Bottle None, K18, Evo, and Goldwell in our salon!

  1. A Great Shampoo/Conditioner Set

There’s no better gift when it comes to hair care than a great shampoo and conditioner set. While drugstore sets certainly do the job, they can sometimes cause damage to your hair. A high-quality shampoo and conditioner will ensure that your hair and scalp look as healthy as can be. Another benefit is that you’ll prevent excessively dry or oily hair. Certain shampoos and conditioners can also aid in hair growth and prevent the loss of that salon colour. Check out some of our favourites in-store!

  1. Hair Serums

With summer on its way, a good hair serum can help to manage the dry Okanagan weather. The right hair serum will help to smooth hair strands and protect them from heat damage. This is especially important for anyone who loves to spend time outdoors. Our salon’s favourite brands carry a number of awesome serums for every hair type and activity level. Whether they love to sunbathe or hike the tallest mountains, we’ve got a serum for you to gift.  Visit us in-store for recommendations on our most loved serums.

  1. A Heat Protectant

Are they using heat tools more than they should? Are they using a heat protectant? If you’ve answered yes to one of these questions, a good heat protectant could be a great gift idea! Heat protectants are ideal for anyone who loves their curling wand or flatiron a bit too much.

Give the Gift of Self-Care

  1. Silk Pillowcase

If fancy products aren’t their thing, consider gifting a silk pillowcase. Silk pillowcases are amazing for keeping you cool and dry throughout the night. They’re also great for preventing bedhead and help diminish the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. Dermatologists and skincare experts recommend sleeping on silk to help maintain healthy skin. Even if these advantages don’t convince you that they need a silk pillowcase, know that they are also incredible for minimizing dust and bacteria. So, if they’re sensitive to common allergens this could be a game-changer for their health!

  1. A New Hair Tool

Has their hairdryer seen better days? Are they still using the same flatiron from the 80s? If so, this might be a good time to gift an upgrade. There are so many heat tools on the market that you might be overwhelmed trying to choose one. So, let’s give a quick rundown of what makes a good heat tool. First off, for wands and flat irons, anything made with ceramic or titanium is ideal. Secondly, having a temperature setting is life-changing for preventing heat damage and customization. Thirdly, search for something with a good warranty or return policy in case something breaks.

  1. A Salon Experience

If none of these haircare gifts suit their style, consider giving the gift of a day at the salon. This is a great way to give them the gift of self-care. If they’re not into getting their hair done, BOTTEGA has a wide range of other services to choose from. For example, lash and brow tints, waxing, and laminations. Check out all the haircare services that we offer on our website and determine which service they will love most!

Keeping your hair in a healthy state is an important part in making sure your hair looks its best! Hair is an essential part of who we are as human beings. It represents our personalities, shows off our interests, and sets us apart from others. But, in order to keep our hair in a healthy condition, it’s crucial that we do more than just style and wash our locks.  The simplest way to achieve healthy hair is by getting regular haircuts. Having a cut or trim every six to eight weeks is a great way to prevent breakage. In this article, we will be going over the benefits of receiving a haircut at our salon in West Kelowna on a regular basis. Follow along below to learn more!

Benefits of Regular Haircuts at a Salon in West Kelowna

  1. Minimize/Prevent Damage

By having your hair cut on a regular basis, you will do wonders for the health of your hair. Trimming your locks every few weeks will keep split ends at bay and improve your cuticles. In turn, this will create a better, healthier hair texture. Avoiding regular haircuts can cause your hair to thin due to split end issues. This is hard to repair once the damage is done. So, keep your hair shiny and full with routine trims.

  1. Increase Growth

Letting a stylist chop off some of your hair every now and then is actually a great way to boost hair growth. While it may seem counterintuitive, cutting off the damaged parts of your hair will make room for more healthy growth. Of course, it is still important that you wash and moisturize your scalp. However, if you’ve been wanting your hair to grow, a regular trim might be the secret to achieving your desired length! Visit one of our stylists in West Kelowna for more information about hair growth.

  1. Maintain Style and Length

Another benefit of having your hair cut often is that you get to maintain a specific style and length. If you have bangs, you’ll know that getting your hair trimmed often is essential in maintaining the style. Furthermore, for those with layered hair, having regular cuts is a much-needed part of retaining the layers. A regular haircut can also be of benefit for those with short hair so that they can preserve the perfect length!

Additional Perks of Regular Salon Visits

  1. Your Hair is Easier to Manage

Going to the salon for a regular trim makes it much easier to manage. Detangling your hair becomes that much simpler when your hair is even and strong. Take back those precious minutes you spend detangling your hair and spend them on something you enjoy. In addition to easier detangling, healthy hair is also less frizzy, smoother, and responds better to styling. Simply cutting your hair on a frequent basis can make your morning routine that much more effortless.

  1. It’s a Form of Self-Care

Visiting the salon is a great way to incorporate self-care into your routine. Hair is a large part of people’s confidence – no matter what gender you identify as. For centuries, hair has been a primary way that humans express their personality. According to an article by Healthline, our hair has a direct impact on our mental well-being. It is thought that bad hair can impact our mood because of the way it changes how we perceive ourselves. If this sounds like something you can relate to, it might be worth it to invest in your hair. We wrote all about haircare as a form of self-care in a blog post last year, and we encourage you to check it out!

  1. Chat With Your Stylist(s)

One of the best parts of visiting the salon is that you get to chat with your stylists. Whether you want to gossip about your neighbour or ask us questions about your hair routine, we’re here to listen. And, we are happy to give you our professional opinion about the best ways to style, care for, and treat your locks!

For many people, curling their hair can be a challenge—one that is only made more difficult by the texture and length of our locks. If you’re a short-haired human who’s looking for some tips on curling your short hair, we’ve got you covered! It can be hard to curl shorter hair, but with the right tips and tricks, it can be easy. Rocking curls of your own can give the illusion of thicker, fuller hair! In this article, one of our hair stylists in West Kelowna will take you step-by-step through the process of curling short hair. Follow along below to learn more!

Hair Stylist in West Kelowna Goes Over Curling Short Hair (Steps 1-4)

  1. Start With Clean Hair

In order to get the best results, it’s a good idea to start with freshly washed locks. Styling with dirty or unwashed hair can prevent the curls from looking their best. If your hair is oily, your curls will likely begin to unravel and won’t hold their shape as well. Once you’ve washed your hair, be sure to let it dry before styling.

  1. Use Your Favourite Heat Protectant

For heat-styled curls, you will need to use a heat protectant. We’ve said it once, and we will say it again, heat protectant is a step you cannot skip! Our stylists can recommend a number of different heat protectants if you’re not sure what to use. By using heat protectant you will preserve the health and longevity of your hair.

  1. Section Your Locks

Now that you have cleaned your hair and applied your favourite heat protectant, it’s time to section off your hair. Sectioning your hair will help achieve better volume, evenness, and overall consistency. You can section off your hair by using hair clips, bobby pins, or elastic bands. The smaller the sections you create, the better.

  1. Choose Your Favourite Curling Tool

Next, you’ll want to determine what kind of curl you are trying to achieve. Curling wands, curling irons, and flat irons are the most common choices for curling your hair. Curling wands and irons are flexible options for those with short hair. This is because they often come in a variety of barrel sizes. Thus, helping you achieve different looks. Bigger barrels are good for beachy waves, and smaller barrels are good for tight curls. Additionally, both tools are very easy to use. By comparison, a flat iron has a slight learning curve in order to achieve the same kind of style.

Curling Short Hair Continued (Steps 5-7)

  1. Methods for Curling

Before you start to curl, you need to know what temperature to set your heat tool. For those with finer, delicate hair, set your device to a maximum of 200 degrees Fahrenheit. For those with thicker, coarser hair, 200-300 degrees Fahrenheit should do the trick! Once you start curling your hair, try to keep the heat on for the least amount of time. When you’re ready to release your hair from the curler, hold the curl against your head for a few seconds until the hair becomes cool. This will help the curl set. Once you’re done, you can spray your hair with hairspray (for longer-lasting curls) and brush through the curls with a paddle brush or your fingers to give a more effortless look.

  1. Heatless Methods

If you don’t want to damage your hair with heat, we hear you! Heatless styling is a much healthier option anyway. The only downside is that heatless curls usually take several hours or overnight before they are ready. For most heatless styles, it is good to have damp hair. So, spray your hair with some water or let it partially air dry after your shower before beginning. Once you’re ready, start sectioning off your locks. Then you can braid, twist, use rollers, or try sock curls for different results. After six to eight hours you should be ready to go! Heatless styles are great time savers for the morning.

  1. Styling and Finishing Touches

Once you’ve achieved the curls of your dreams, it’s time to style. Using additional products like hairspray or salt spray can help them hold their shape all day long. Talk with your stylist about what kind of products you should put in your hair after curling!

As some of you may know, Bottega has recently begun offering hair extension services! If you’re thinking about getting West Kelowna hair extensions, there are a few things you should know before booking your appointment. Hair extensions can be costly, so it’s important to carefully consider your decision. Furthermore, it is equally important that you pick the right type of extensions for your lifestyle. To help you out, we created a two-part series that provides you with information about the pros and cons of the different types of extensions that we offer. We wrote part one last month, and it covers all you need to know about tape-ins and keratin bonds. Keep on reading below to discover part two of our hair extension information series!

Pros and Cons of Sew-In West Kelowna Hair Extensions

Sew-in wefts require no heat, chemicals or adhesives to achieve the highest coverage! To install wefts, they are sewn onto a beaded foundation that is created with your natural hair. At Bottega, we offer two kinds of sew-in wefts: volume wefts and hand-tied wefts.

  • Sew-in wefts are very gentle on your hair if done correctly. Compared to other hair extension methods, they don’t need any heat, chemicals or adhesives to apply the extensions to your hair. This makes them a safe option for those who are worried about damaging their natural locks.
  • Another pro of sew-in wefts is that many clients find them very comfortable and versatile. Similar to keratin bond extensions, sew-ins allow you to style your extensions in a number of ways without worrying about having them show.
  • Additionally, sew-ins can be worn in the water which allows clients to continue to live their normal lifestyle without needing to avoid the things that they love most.
  • Finally, sew-ins allow clients to reuse the hair that they purchase for up to one year if properly taken care of. This is a big advantage compared to other extensions which require that you have new hair at each reapplication.

  • While many people find that sew-ins are very comfortable, they can cause pain and headaches if they are sewn in too tightly. This can also weaken your roots and eventually can lead to hair loss.
  • Sew-ins are not ideal for those with thin or fine hair.
  • Hand-tied wefts can be more expensive than other extension methods available.
  • Like many other hair extension methods, sew-ins can be difficult to wash since your natural hair is in braids while the extensions are in.
  • Sew-in hair extensions can take a long time to install.

Pros and Cons of I-Tip Extensions

I-Tips which are also known as microbeads are an individual bond method. They are installed by clamping an extension strand (it’s actually a small bundle, not one strand of hair) and a small section of your natural hair inside a silicone-lined or micro-lock bead. The extension is tipped with polyurethane, creating a cushion of protection for your natural hair inside the bead.

  • I-Tip extensions are good for people with thin or fine hair since each I-Tip extension is rather lightweight. Additionally, it will be concealed well in any type of hair because of the small size of the tip.
  • Unlike other extensions, there is no heat or glue needed to install I-Tips. This means minimal damage to your natural hair.
  • I-Tips are great for those who like to wear their hair in up-dos.
  • These extensions are ideal for people who want to fill in thin areas of their hair or add volume.
  • I-Tips work well for people who are looking to get highlights or pops of colour in their hair without dying their natural locks.

  • For the first little while, I-Tips can be very itchy and uncomfortable. This usually lasts for about 2 weeks after the initial installation.
  • You have to be extremely careful when washing and brushing your hair with I-Tips. It is important to avoid tugging or scratching at the bead. This can make hair maintenance very tedious.
  • You need to have I-Tips reinstalled on a regular basis otherwise the beads will begin to show.

In British Columbia, the beauty industry is deregulated. This means that not every stylist or esthetician that you visit in B.C. will be licensed. In fact, there is no law in B.C. that states that stylists working at a salon need to have any sort of education or experience. Instead, it is up to the owner of the salon to ensure that their staff has sufficient knowledge and training. Comparatively, all other provinces in Canada require that hair stylists are licensed. This means they must receive an education and pass the licensing requirements in their province in order to work as a hairdresser. In this article, we will be delving deeper into the hairdressing industry in B.C. and explaining why you should choose Bottega for your next hair/beauty appointment!

Follow along below to learn more.

Hairdressing in B.C.

In B.C. no one is required to have any certification to do any hair or esthetic service. Shocking, yes, B.C. is the only province that is unregulated. The province used to be regulated and beauty salons were required to have health and safety inspections like any other business. However, in 2003, the government deregulated the beauty industry. Thus, allowing anyone (license or not) to provide hairdressing or esthetic services across the province. Unlike B.C., the rest of Canada is fully regulated. In all other places in the nation, you must have Trade Certification to be able to do hair, either as an Apprentice, Journeyman (Certificate of Qualification), or Red Seal (internationally recognized). It should be noted that not all hairdressers that went to hair school and hold hair school certificates are Trade Certified!

Most employers of beauty businesses in B.C. require employees to have a certificate of completion from a recognized cosmetology school. Although, it’s hard to say whether a salon has licensed employees. This is because the government does not regulate this in any way. Furthermore, since beauty salons are not regulated by the provincial government, not all establishments will undergo health and safety inspections. Despite this, Interior Health does provide a list of requirements for hair salons to follow regarding health and safety.

At Bottega, we have three stylists that have certificates from Hair Schools, and they will be going for their Certificate of Qualification (journeyman) and then going for their Red Seal Ticket. However, we also have two Red Seal Certified stylists and two Journeyman Trade Certified stylists. You can check the qualifications of our stylists on the “Meet the Stylists” page!

Why Choose Bottega?

Salons that don’t require their stylists to undergo proper training pose several risks to their clients. For instance, higher chances of infection or spreading of diseases. Moreover, there is a large possibility that an untrained stylist could damage or ruin a person’s hair. In addition to this, placing scissors, razors, and chemicals in the hands of an untrained stylist can result in serious injury. Finally, there is always the risk that you will leave the salon with a bad haircut.

To avoid these dangers, we recommend finding a salon that is open to the training of their stylists. As we mentioned above, all of our stylists have received education and training prior to working at our salon. Moreover, our salon is clean and follows the guidelines set by Interior Health for how a salon is to be operated. This means that our clients don’t need to worry about unsanitary conditions or nightmare haircuts. Instead, they can find comfort in knowing that our qualified stylists will be able to provide them with their dream hair! Whether that’s a new colour, layers, or a different length. You’ll also be happy to know that all of our beauty room services are performed by the same, highly-qualified stylists. Enjoy a brow tint/lamination, lash tint/lamination, or brow wax stress-free.

2023 is here! And, what better time than now to start thinking about hair care goals for the new year? There are so many ways that you can improve your locks over the course of the next 12 months. From frequent trims to better products, your options for hair care are endless. If you have goals of achieving luscious locks or simply maintaining hair health, it is important that you create some resolutions. By achieving your hair goals you can also improve other parts of yourself. Such as your confidence and happiness. Hair care is about so much more than looks! And, it is essential to realize the impact that a good hair day can have on your life. Follow along below to discover some inspiration for your 2023 hair care resolutions.

Styling Resolutions:

  1. Embrace Your Natural Locks

Everyone’s hair is different in its own way. Whether that be through texture, colour, length, or thickness. It can be hard to embrace your natural hair; especially if you aren’t sure how to maintain it. However, learning to love and care for your natural locks can be the key to achieving the hair you’ve always wanted. Accepting your hair for what it is will help improve your self-confidence and lead to healthier haircare habits. The journey to loving your hair can be incredibly rewarding and the new year is the perfect time to start embracing your locks.

  1. Put Down the Heat Tools

This one is for all the people out there who can’t live without their straighteners, curlers and blow dryers. 2023 is the year that we stop relying on heat tools to style our locks. Sure, it’s nice to pull out the heat tools every now and again to achieve that movie star look. But, please, allow your hair to rest once and a while. Air drying and heatless styling tools are your friends in 2023. This saves your hair from burning to a crisp and helps minimize spending on restorative products.

  1. Test out a New Style, Length, or Colour

Change is in the air. There’s no better time to test out a new style, length, or colour than at the beginning of the year. Changing up your look could be exactly what you need to kickstart the new you. While testing out a new style can be nerve-wracking, it is important to remember that hair grows back! So, whatever you do, you’ll always have the option to return it to its original state.

Haircare Resolutions from Kelowna Hair Stylists:

  1. Wash your Hair Accordingly

There are so many misconceptions about hair washing. Some people swear by washing once a week, and others would prefer to wash their locks every day. But, the truth is, everyone is different. Not all hair types will behave the same with each washing routine. This is why it is important to figure out what works for you. If you are curious about learning more about hair washing, check out the post we wrote about in October of 2022.

  1. Trim Often

A trim is one of the easiest ways to make your hair feel brand new. In fact, getting trims regularly can make your hair all the healthier and easier to manage. Although, it is important to note that the frequency at which you trim your locks highly depends on how long your hair is. Those with pixie cuts are more likely to need to trim their hair on a regular basis. By comparison, someone with long hair won’t need to trim nearly as often. With this in mind, a trim can be the perfect way to breathe life back into your hair.

  1. Invest in Quality Products

Quality hair care products are certainly worth the hype. Although it is undoubtedly more affordable to spend your money on drugstore products, the results are subpar. And, sometimes even damaging. Contrastively, high-end hair products are designed with quality ingredients to ensure your hair stays luscious and beautiful at all times. Moreover, better hair products can make a huge difference in the appearance of your hair and your hair’s health. Try out a better shampoo in 2023 and feel the difference!

  1. Scalp Care

Exfoliating your scalp removes dead skin cells that clog pores which in turn helps stimulate blood circulation. Thus, promoting hair growth!

Sustainability in hairdressing is an important part of reducing climate change. At BOTTEGA, we have taken it upon ourselves to ensure that our salon is as environmentally friendly as possible. Haircare is an incredibly resource-intensive industry. Products, water consumption, and power are all heavily utilized in the haircare and beauty industry. It is so important to reflect on the impact our beauty routines have on the environment. By doing so, we can help combat climate change and other subsequent environmental issues. In this article, we will be discussing the importance of sustainability in a hair salon. As well as, how you can alter your beauty routine to create a smaller carbon footprint. Why Sustainability Matters in a West Kelowna Salon?

Hairstylists are in a unique position to encourage others to practice sustainability. The ways they interact with clients can help them see a greener alternative. From product consumption to washing habits, there’s always room for improvement. People are more likely to listen to what their hairdresser has to say, especially when it comes to beauty products. This makes it easy for them to advise people to use less water by washing their hair only a few times per week. And, instead of washing, they can tell people about the benefits of using dry shampoo or a leave-in conditioner. Thus, drastically reducing the amount of energy and hot water consumed in households.

Hot water makes up the majority of household emissions. The longer hot water is running and the hotter it is, the more energy is being consumed. This translates to a higher carbon footprint and more money. Therefore, people who take shorter showers, with a lower temperature are more likely to have a smaller carbon footprint. And, save more money!

It is also important for salons to be sustainable because they can help reduce waste. Hair clippings, product bottles, dye packaging, and all other waste have to go somewhere. However, with the right methods, salons can reduce waste and save excess products. At Bottega, we work with GreenCircle Salons to ensure that all our salon waste is either recycled or repurposed. They also provide us with special tools to make sure no product or dye goes to waste! Working with GreenCircle Salons has enabled us to become carbon neutral.

As a West Kelowna salon, it is so important to become sustainable. Having a green salon will help the business, the clients, and the planet! Educating each other on how to practice carbon-neutral habits is essential.

How You Can Make Your Beauty Routine More Sustainable!

For those looking to make a greener change in their beauty routine, we have a few sustainability tips. There are so many ways that you can lessen your impact on the environment. For instance, if you wash your hair 7-days a week, try cutting back to 3-days per week. This will help lessen your water consumption and product use. Instead, you can use a sustainable dry shampoo or leave-in conditioner.

Secondly, finding products that are sustainably made and have minimal packaging is so beneficial. Beauty items with long shelf lives and refillable options are much better for the environment. Ditch your single-use items and find long-lasting alternatives to minimize waste and cost. However, if you still want to use single-use products, make sure that the ingredients are natural and the packaging is either compostable or reusable. Many companies are changing their packaging to be sustainable, so it shouldn’t be too hard to make the switch!

Another way that you can make your beauty routine green, is by supporting the right brands. Finding brands that actively promote and practice sustainable habits. Purchasing products from places like BOTTEGA that are involved in recycling programs or local companies are two examples of choosing a more sustainable brand.

BOTTEGA On Going Green and Being an Example for A Sustainable Hair Salon in Kelowna

Going green is something that BOTTEGA prides itself on. As the world becomes more polluted, we began incorporating greener ways of operating. BOTTEGA hopes that other local companies will match our efforts in finding new ways to minimize their businesses’ environmental footprint.

We began our green efforts 6 months ago when we were certified as a Green Circle Salon! Green Circle Salons is a company that works with various beauty salons and spas to minimize salon waste. The excess hair colour, bottles, products, and other salon-related items don’t go to the landfill. We separate products and waste into bags for recycling. The bags are then shipped to Green Circle Salons to be processed and repurposed.

BOTTEGA Salon only sent 5 boxes of waste back to Green Circle Salons! That works out to less than 1 box per month! The total pounds of waste over the duration of being with GCS was a minuscule 116lbs.

Moreover, we had no excess colour diverted.

This is an astonishing statistic to achieve! In fact, even the GCS rep was shocked!

How did we do it?

In order to reduce the excess colour diverted to 0, we used a weighing system called Vish. Vish ensures that every bit of colour used is weighed and recorded. If too much product has been dispensed, then the program will adjust the amount dispensed for the next visit. Our owners are in love with this earth-friendly method for salon waste, stating that; “It’s been really fantastic,” and because of this we “haven’t had enough over pours to even fill a Green Circle return bag yet”!

West Kelowna’s BOTTEGA Salon is hopeful that other salons will follow suit. We would love to see more businesses make an effort to find more environmentally friendly options as we’ve done. Many companies are offering sustainable options for customers.
